Heat pump repair near you

Fast, Honest Heat Pump Repair for Chicago Homes

A heat pump works harder in Chicago than almost anywhere else. It heats your home through long, below-freezing winters and cools it through humid summers, so it runs nearly all year. When something goes wrong, you notice quickly: rooms that will not warm up, cold air from the vents, an outdoor unit covered in ice or an electric bill that suddenly jumps.

Browns Heating & Cooling provides prompt, efficient heat pump repair across Chicago and Cook County, from Lincoln Park, Lakeview and Logan Square to Hyde Park and Beverly. Our EPA-certified, factory-trained technicians diagnose the real cause, whether it is a failed capacitor, a refrigerant leak, a stuck reversing valve or a defrost control that has stopped working, and fix it right the first time.

We repair central ducted heat pumps, dual-fuel systems paired with a gas furnace and ductless mini-splits. We are available 24/7 for emergencies. Call (708) 536-8134 or book online.

Is it an emergency?

When to Call for Emergency Heat Pump Repair

Not every heat pump problem is an emergency, but in a Chicago winter some are. If your heat pump is your main heat source and it stops heating in freezing weather, a house can get dangerously cold and pipes can freeze. Electrical problems, such as a burning smell or a breaker that keeps tripping, should also be checked right away.

No heat in freezing weather? If your thermostat has an Emergency Heat setting, switch to it to keep the house warm with your backup heat, then call us 24/7 at (708) 536-8134. If you smell burning or see smoke, turn the system off at the thermostat and breaker and call.

Call us right away

  • No heat when it is near or below freezing outside
  • The outdoor unit is completely encased in ice and is not defrosting
  • Burning smell, smoke or a breaker that trips again after you reset it
  • Loud grinding, screeching or banging from the outdoor unit
  • Water leaking near the indoor unit, electrical parts or ceiling

Book a repair soon

  • Air from the vents feels lukewarm or cool for long stretches
  • The system runs constantly or short cycles
  • Backup or emergency heat comes on far more often than usual
  • New buzzing, clicking or rattling noises
  • Electric bills higher than last year for no clear reason

Troubleshooting

Common Heat Pump Problems We Repair in Chicago

Here are the problems we see most often, what usually causes them and what you can safely check before you call. Refrigerant, electrical components and anything inside the unit should be left to a licensed technician.

Winter & defrost

Heat Pump Problems in a Chicago Winter

A heat pump pulls heat from the outdoor air, even when it is well below freezing. As it does, frost forms on the outdoor coil. Every so often the system switches into a defrost cycle to melt that frost, usually for 5 to 15 minutes, and during that time you may see steam from the outdoor unit and feel cooler air indoors. That is normal. What is not normal is a coil that stays covered in thick ice, cold air that never stops, or a defrost cycle that seems to run constantly.

Most heat pumps also have backup heat, either electric heat strips in the air handler or a gas furnace in a dual-fuel system. Backup heat is meant to help on the coldest days and during defrost. If it is running most of the time, the heat pump itself is usually not doing its job, and your electric bill will show it. A failing defrost sensor or control board, low refrigerant, a weak outdoor fan or a compressor problem are the usual causes.

Snow and ice add their own problems in Chicago. Drifting snow can bury the outdoor unit, and water dripping from a gutter can freeze on top of it. Keep at least a foot or two of clearance around the unit, and call us rather than chipping at ice, which can puncture the coil.

Ducted, ductless & dual fuel

We Repair Every Type of Heat Pump

Central air-source heat pumps connect to your ductwork and replace both a furnace and an air conditioner, or work alongside a gas furnace in a dual-fuel setup that switches to gas on the coldest days. We repair outdoor units, indoor air handlers, refrigerant lines, reversing valves, defrost controls and the thermostats and wiring that tie it all together.

Ductless mini-splits are heat pumps too, and they are common in Chicago condos, additions, converted attics and older homes without ductwork. Their indoor heads need clean filters and coils, clear condensate drains and correctly charged refrigerant lines to keep heating in winter. We repair single-zone and multi-zone mini-splits from every major manufacturer. Learn more about our ductless mini-split services.

Whatever the system, we start with a full diagnosis and give you an upfront price before any work begins.

Repair or replace?

Should You Repair or Replace Your Heat Pump?

Most heat pump problems are worth repairing. Capacitors, contactors, fan motors, sensors, defrost controls and small refrigerant leaks are routine repairs that restore heating and cooling for a fraction of the cost of a new system.

Replacement starts to make sense when the heat pump is past about 10 to 15 years old, needs repairs every season, or faces a major repair such as a failed compressor on an older unit. Very old systems that use R-22 refrigerant are another case: R-22 is no longer produced in the United States, so recharging those units keeps getting more expensive.

We will always tell you honestly which option makes sense. If a new system is the better investment, see our heat pump installation and replacement service and ask about financing on approved credit.

Prevent the next breakdown

Avoid Heat Pump Repairs With Regular Maintenance

Because a heat pump runs for both heating and cooling, it gets twice the use of a furnace or air conditioner. Regular maintenance, ideally before winter and again before summer, catches worn capacitors, dirty coils, low refrigerant and failing defrost parts before they leave you without heat.

A tune-up includes cleaning the outdoor and indoor coils, checking refrigerant levels, testing the reversing valve and defrost cycle, tightening electrical connections, checking the capacitor and contactor, clearing the condensate drain and confirming the thermostat and backup heat work correctly.

Simple habits that help

  • Change or clean the air filter every 1–3 months
  • Keep 1–2 feet clear around the outdoor unit
  • Clear snow after storms and keep gutter water off the unit
  • Leave the thermostat on Heat with the fan on Auto
  • Avoid big temperature setbacks that trigger backup heat
  • Book a tune-up before winter and before summer

What Chicago Homeowners Say

★★★★★ Rated 4.9 on Google by Chicago homeowners · See all reviews

I called Browns late Tuesday during a heatwave, and they were able to schedule a service appointment for the next day. The service call cost $125, but that amount goes towards any repair cost if needed so the initial call is essentially free if you need service costing more than $125. The techs arrived exactly on time at the start of the appointment window, and quickly found the issues (dirty condenser coils, refrigerant top-off, and system sealant to address the small leak). Ramond clearly explained the impact of each along with the cost to fix, then confirmed which services I wanted and what my total would be before starting the work. I also appreciate that Ramond answered all my dumb questions about how air conditioning actually works; he's a great science teacher 🤓. The cost was less than I expected for a next-day service (coil cleaning $239, sealant $285, and a few pounds of refrigeratant was $370). During the payment process, the tech didn't prompt for a tip, unlike most companies. So don't forget to ask them for their Zelle/Venmo if you want to send a tip
Quick responses from a professional company. Although it was peak season for AC’s, they were able to send a crew over within 24-hours. This was so critical for us with 3 young kids in the house and the temps rising to 85 degrees. Angelique on the phone gave clear instructions on what I needed to do before the service guys showed up. Ramod & Eric were courteous and wore shoe covers as they entered the house. They took a quick look and knew what needed to be done immediately. As a Realtor, I’ve changed many an AC units and their prices were very fair. We ended up repairing instead of a new AC unit. The repair was less than what he originally quoted. How is that for honest service?! Amazing! They will have to come back for a service ($99) as we ran out of time. I can highly recommend Browns Heating & Cooling without any hesitation.

Obsessed 10/10. So friendly, really responsive company, cute service techs (big plus haha), honest, fast and reliable. They were literally here the next day. Love them, hate my 30 year old furnace.

Highly recommend these guys. We had a cooling issue, and Steven was here and gone in under an hour. He pointed out the issue and repaired it without talking much.

Highly recommend them! We needed a whole house humidifier because the winter air was making everyone in the house feel sick. The installation was very clean, and they tied it right into the water line without any leaks or issues. The technician showed me how to adjust the humidity level based on the temperature outside, so we don't get condensation on the windows. It's made the house feel much more comfortable, and my skin isn't nearly as dry as it used to be. I’m happy with the service.

I decided to upgrade to a Nest thermostat and scheduled the installation with this company. The technician arrived on time and installed the thermostat quickly. He also walked me through the settings and showed me how to control it through the phone app. The system now adjusts the temperature automatically during the day, which is convenient. It has made managing the indoor temperature much easier. The team from Brown’s handled the installation smoothly and made sure everything was working before leaving.

FAQs

Heat Pump Repair FAQs

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air?

If it lasts only 5 to 15 minutes, the heat pump is probably in a normal defrost cycle. If it continues, check that the thermostat is set to Heat and the fan to Auto. Ongoing cold air usually points to low refrigerant, a stuck reversing valve or a defrost control problem, which need a technician.

Is ice on my heat pump normal in winter?

A light layer of frost is normal and should clear during the defrost cycle. If the outdoor unit is covered in thick ice or the coil stays iced for hours, the defrost system, refrigerant charge or outdoor fan likely needs repair. Do not chip ice off the coil.

Do heat pumps work in Chicago winters?

Yes. Modern cold-climate heat pumps keep heating well below freezing, and most systems have electric or gas backup heat for the coldest days. Regular maintenance and correct thermostat settings help them run efficiently all winter.

What is emergency heat on a heat pump?

Emergency heat runs only your backup heat, such as electric heat strips or a gas furnace, without the heat pump. Use it if the heat pump has stopped heating, then call for repair. Running on emergency heat for long periods costs more.

Do you offer 24/7 emergency heat pump repair?

Yes. We answer 24/7 for no-heat calls and other urgent heat pump problems, and same-day appointments are available.

Do you repair ductless mini-splits?

Yes. Ductless mini-splits are heat pumps, and we repair single-zone and multi-zone systems. See our ductless mini-split services.

How long does a heat pump last?

Most heat pumps last about 10 to 15 years. Regular maintenance helps them reach the top of that range, especially in Chicago, where they run for both heating and cooling.

Which heat pump brands do you repair?

We repair all makes and models of ducted heat pumps and ductless mini-splits. See the brands we service.
