How to Maximize Your Air Conditioner’s Efficiency

When it comes to extreme summer heat, your best friend is your air conditioner. Your HVAC system contributes to your energy consumption, which is one reason that budget-conscious individuals avoid using it. However, there are methods to maximize your air conditioner’s efficiency while keeping costs low. Here are four ways “How to Maximize Your Air Conditioner’s Efficiency and save energy costs.

1. Use a Programmable Thermostat

A digital thermostat allows you to set the temperature when you are home and away. When you’re home, keep it at 78 degrees. That’s what the Department of Energy suggests for the best balance of comfort and energy savings. Another tip is to raise the temperature when you’re going to be away and to lower it just before you get home.

For example, set the temperature to 82 degrees while you’re away, and lower it to 78 degrees about 30 minutes before you’re scheduled to arrive home. The thermostat will lower the temperature, and it will be nice and cool when everyone walks in the door.

2. Cook and Do Chores Later

When you’re trying to keep cool, activities like cooking, running the dishwasher, or doing laundry can produce excess heat, making your air conditioner cycle more often. A better way to cool the house while keeping energy costs low is to cook outdoors or to eat foods that don’t have to be cooked. Also, run heat-producing appliances after the sun goes down and when temperatures are naturally cooler. Running your dishwasher and other energy-consuming appliances at off-peak times is more efficient and saves money.

3. Change Your Filter

Air filters help your air conditioner work better. Change your AC filter every three months or more often if it gets dirty. Dirt and debris clogging the filter can restrict airflow, making your AC work harder to maintain your desired temperature.

4. Keep Your HVAC System in Good Shape

Regularly scheduled maintenance helps your air conditioner run more efficiently. It can help you avoid costly repairs by catching issues before they become a problem.
